If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then we should all have an eye as keen as Anita Calero’s. The [要查看本链接请先注册并登录] began collecting furniture by designers like Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand and George Nakashima, and ceramics by Scandinavian artists like Berndt Friberg, Carl-Harry Stalhane and Stig Lindberg, before they became highly sought-after. But now that Calero has sold her Chelsea apartment and her house in the Hamptons — so that she can spend more time traveling between New York, Europe and her native Colombia — she is also parting ways with some favorite furnishings and artworks in a [要查看本链接请先注册并登录] sale at Christie’s on June 13.

Calero recalled that she started buying these pieces when the prices were relatively low. “I thought of them as my Ikea pieces,” she said, only half in jest. “I bought the Swedish vases 30 years ago, when Robert Mapplethorpe was buying them to use in his photographs. I wasn’t collecting then. It was my furniture,” Indeed, a Prouvé table and chairs were the centerpiece of Calero’s well-used kitchen. Calero’s knack for mixing the elegant and the humble — putting a glass sculpture by Ritsue Mishima on a piece of scrap wood, or outfitting a Prouvé cabinet with her stereo equipment, for instance — led Christie’s to photograph Calero’s apartment for the auction’s catalog, and to recreate vignettes from the apartment for the presale exhibition.
卡莱罗回忆说，当初她开始入手这些作品时，它们的售价还相当低廉。“我把它们当成了自己的宜家(Ikea)单品，”卡莱罗半开玩笑地说，“这些瑞典花瓶是我30年前买的，那时候罗伯特·马普尔索普（Robert Mapplethorpe，美国摄影家，以朴实无装饰的黑白照片闻名——译注）曾把它们买回来作为自己摄影作品里的素材。而我当初买下它们，并不是为了收藏，只是当成家具而已。”的确，在卡莱罗那间使用率很高的厨房当中，发挥主要作用的是普罗韦设计的一套桌椅。卡莱罗的混搭技巧高超，能将高雅与朴素完美地融合在一起。比方说，她把三岛律惠（Ritsue Mishima，音译）创作的玻璃雕塑放置在一块木材边角料上，或是在普鲁韦设计的橱柜里装上立体音响设备。这样的搭配是独一无二的，使得佳士得不仅登门拍摄阿莱罗公寓的照片，纳入其拍品目录，还在预售展上重现了她公寓内的布置。
Calero will hardly be camping out in this next phase of her life — she designed a house for herself in her hometown, Cali. (It’s black on the outside and all white on the inside.) But divesting herself of so many lovingly gathered objects isn’t easy. “I’m dismantling my life,” she explained. But she emphasized that everything she collected was somehow related to nature, and her particular way of seeing. “A friend of mine called my apartment the museum of natural history,” she said. “I created something comfortable for the soul.”
